The Farmers who grow for GROW ALABAMA are real people, with families, hopes and dreams like many of us. They are deeply grateful for the opportunity to bring their crops to market in a much larger way than they would be able to by sitting in a farmer's market or some roadside stand. GROW ALABAMA enables these farmers to sell their crops in an efficient, cost effective manner.

Last week, one of our farmers, Matthew Pippen of Luverne, Alabama sent us a message regarding how he personally relies on the efforts of GROW ALABAMA to bring his crops to market. Here is his letter in unedited form:

"Thanks for the help today. One important question: I forgot to ask today. Before I invest in equipment, what are your plans for the coming years with Grow Alabama? We have started a good working relationship and want to continue to have one with you. Without your efforts I would have no market for my crops."

Our current institutions simply can't survive without serious re-thinking and bold, courageous action. Do you see what I see? Extensive failure of our “bedrock” institutions—all of them. The change we need will require different ways of thinking, not just about economics and politics but about how the world works and how we work in this world. A new reality of this is emerging.

The change we need must begin with each of us. We must abandon our relentless pursuit of wealth and return to the pursuit of real joy. Beyond some very modest level of material well-being, our happiness depends on the quality of our relationships and our sense of purpose and meaning in life -- not additional wealth. I believe that each of us has a purpose in life, which is to realize the highest potential from our unique abilities, aptitudes, and aspirations. The key to joy and happiness is not to become wealthy, famous, or powerful--it is love and contribution. The key to joy and happiness is to fulfill our unique purpose in life and contribute that as broadly as you can; make your contribution- for the love of it.

Real change rarely comes from those in positions of political or economic power because the status quo is working for them. Real change must come from us “common folk” whose common sense tells us that money is not all there is to live for; we must return to the pursuit of the joy in living.

We All agree much more than we disagree, we have just become accustomed to focusing on our differences. If we are to sustain our economy and our society, we must come together around the core values that unite us, such as integrity, personal responsibility and mutual respect to find common ground on the social and political issues that divide us. We must learn to live in open and honest communication around these issues. We must see that the questions are more important than the answers. We need to restore ecological, social, and economic integrity to our economy and society. Unfortunately, these changes will not take place without your involvement.

Grow Alabama is one of the institutional revisions now occurring. Our mission is economic and environmental sustainability through Agriculture. Participate. Support it. This Blog will keep you informed about the progress of Grow Alabama and welcome your input.
